The Blacksmith asked to investigate a strange letter he received, signed by someone he doesn't recognize. The note was shipped by the Conways, couriers from the Nomad Highlands. Their shipment must've gone through the Trade Outpost "Blazing Rock".

Solving this mystery will allow you to craft better armor.

The Conway brothers traveled through Umber Hollow, where they were attacked. It seems like the Blacksmith was meant to receive an item, which was left behind in a town called Jasper Isles when the Conways fled. The note the Blacksmith received seems to be a fabrication of the Conways, since the original note was lost alongside a gift.
